Sponsored by PowerPerfector

Footprint Friends Limited / Eco social networking for 10-18 years
http://www.footprintfriends.com/wow-awards.htm

Subject: FAO Citizenship/PSHCE Coordinator: Get Your Students' Voices Heard!

Dear Teacher or PSHCE Coordinator,

I am writing to inform you of a fantastic opportunity for you, your school and your students to make a difference and address climate change. The Wipe Out Waste competition, part of Footprint Friends, is calling on all young people to team up and think of a way to eliminate waste at their school.

We're asking groups of students (up to four in a group) to come up with a proposal to make their school less wasteful & more eco-friendly and submit their idea online at: www.footprintfriends.com/wow.

The top 10 entries will be invited to pitch their idea to a Dragons' Den style panel of "green judges", including an MP and a climate change scientist, who will decide on the best ideas, which will be scoped for national implementation. The winning idea will also win a complimentary powerPerfector unit worth up to £10 000 for their school, which could reduce energy usage by up to 20%!

The closing date for the competition is the 30th September, so get your entries in asap!

The competition can be promoted in tutor time, during assembly or in a PSHCE or Citizenship lesson. We hope the attached PowerPoint and lesson plan will be useful.

We look forward to hearing from you soon and good luck!

Christophe and the rest of the Footprint Friends Team.

End of summer term or July 31st 2009
Competition: To Wipe Out Waste
Age groups: 10-12yrs, 13-16yrs,
17-18yrs
Awards Date: 3rd
Nov 2009 - London
Contact: jonathan.b@footprintfriends.com
website: www.footprintfriends.com/wow

WHAT:

We are inviting school-age students from year 6 and above
(10+) to team up and present ONE BIG WOW (Wipe Out Waste) IDEA for their school to Footprint Friends, for an opportunity to be selected for the WOW awards finals at the
Frontline Club in London on November 3rd.

WOW
STUDENTS BRIEF

Their brief is to: group up into teams of up to 4; assess
the potential impact of waste wiped out via the adoption of their ONE BIG WOW
IDEA; complete the WOW questionnaire; and submit it to footprint friends by the
end of the summer term. (*We'll accept ideas up until July 31st or
later if you twist our arm, and give us a good reason!).

Waste* in this context would be in the broadest sense; it
could be referenced by energy, water, food, materials, carbon, time and money
and so on. They will also need to speculate how much waste would be saved if
their idea was adopted nationally.

*Our definition of waste is anything that is being used carelessly,
being wasted, thrown away unnecessarily, misused, is surplus to requirement and
so on. - The WOW aim is to encourage schools to get closer and closer to being
zero waste. Put simply, zero waste extends current approaches to recycling by
introducing the concept of circular systems in which as much waste as possible
is reused, similar to the way that resources are reused in nature.

AWARD
CATEGORIES IN AGES:

i) 10-12 / ii) 13-16 / iii) 17-18 (6th form
students)

DEADLINE FOR
SUBMISSION OF WOW QUESTIONNAIRES:

Friday July
31st

THE
WOW FACTOR:

During the summer holidays, the team at footprint friends
will log, record and analyse all the entrants.

We'll be looking for the top three BIG WOW ideas from each
age group + one other, that generate the most savings, are the most practical
to apply, and the most likely to succeed and get implemented by the DCSF (The
Department for Children, Schools & Families) in schools nationwide.

All entrants will receive an official footprint friends WOW
certificate with the number of their WOW idea, and all WOW ideas will be
included in the on-line virtual 2009 big WOW ideas book.

The ten BIG WOW teams will be invited to London to present
their ideas to the Green Dragon's Den in November.

From September to October, the footprint friends team will
arrange school site visits for each of the ten big WOW idea teams. During the
visit we will assist in polishing the big WOW pitches, provide presentation
coaching and general media training, and prepare each team for pitching to the
green dragons at the award ceremony.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on-line giving all
schools who've participated an opportunity to be ‘virtually' in the dragons
den. Each team will be given 5 minutes to pitch their idea to the green dragons
- every member of the team presenting is encouraged to have a role.

The idea(s) with the biggest WOW factor for our panel of
judges, will be scoped for national implementation in all UK schools. We're
already in touch with the DCSF as they are looking for innovation and action
within the school environment under their sustainable development mandate.

The 2009 WOW idea team and their teacher(s) will be asked to
be a part of taking their WOW idea into production nationwide. The school would
have a complimentary powerPerfector* unit installed, enabling the school to substantially
reduce their energy usage.
