The countdown to Copenhagen

Silently, while the media force us to focus on mankind’s worst qualities – greed, selfishness and blind ambition – in the background time ticks unrepentant.

As we observe the very fabric of our political heritage unravel, we are stunned by the exposed inner workings of a system where ‘being more equal than others’ is hard coded into the rules and time dissolves while we debate and consider the validity of ‘honesty’ and vocational honour.

Yet time overshadows everything and will not be stopped; a date with destiny awaits us all.

The hour is upon those we trust to take action on climate change – in December this year the world will meet in Copenhagen. It will represent a defining moment when the entire world has the opportunity to act together to limit global warming and its effect on humanity. This is a big responsibility and it demands the best qualities in humankind.

So what should we hope for? Well underlying all agreements, we hope that the bigger picture is taken into account; the bigger picture that is the future for our children. This may seem obvious but the obvious can be tossed aside in the pursuit of personal gain if the opportunity presents its self – like false expenses claims that seem within the rules at the time of submission – only with our environment there is no room for ‘honest mistakes’. The science is conclusive and the challenge is not going away.

This is why we have to make our children visible at Copenhagen. We need to remind the negotiators that the decisions they make will impact others long after they have left this earth. We need to rattle convention and demand that hearts are open to the right solutions regardless of personal gain in the face of the biggest crisis we have ever had to face.

The million feet to Copenhagen is a way to represent young people at the UNFCCC process and we make a very simple request for as many painted feet as possible to be photographed and sent to us for inclusion in our gallery. In addition we are seeking youngsters to wield their mighty pens and write poetry for their dreams for the future. The product of the painted feet and the poetry will be a book of dreams that we will take to Copenhagen. The title of the book – ‘Book of Dreams’ will carry a sub title – ‘Tread softly for you tread on my dreams’ and we wish to generate a movement for children in the process.

Heathrow, Heartache and Hope

It’s not just the governments recent decision on the expansion of Heathrow that leaves me almost lost for words and deeply troubled – it’s the fact that the decision feels so completely at odds with climate change advice and our ambitions to protect our future environment. In spite of the informed opposition to the plans, the science that is conclusive and all the talk about targets set to reduce carbon emissions (in this the most important and challenging year in the history of humanity) the UK had shown it’s self to be weak in it’s resolve and happy to bullishly lead us into environmental disaster. Heathrow is like a trigger to a heavily loaded gun.

So what does this decision say to our nation?

Climate Change is not really a problem? That cash today is worth more than life tomorrow? That landmark change and passionate commitment is not really necessary? That we can use monetary gain as an excuse to ignore the warnings and thus continue our environmentally harmful behaviour? Or worse that carbon reduction commitments can be waived if we think that we might lose out financially – great tactic methinks on the road to the UN climate talks in Copenhagen – NOT! What could this trigger – who knows, but just thinking about it makes my heart sink; it actually hurts.

When will our leaders recognise that we will all lose in the end if we are not strong and if we lose the courage of our convictions. You may remember the ‘Act on CO2’ campaign? I’ll remind you – very bad lady getting out of bath causing a nasty black carbon footprint – shame her she should have had a shower etc… Nice slogan… where did that come from… I can just see a flood of black sticky stuff spewing out of the doors of no10. Like Lady Macbeth our leadership will learn to late that once the deed is done no amount of washing will take the stain away and nothing will ‘sweeten this little hand’.

I am but one voice – so if you are listening please set the right example, do the right thing for our country, our children and our future; a carbon reduction commitment is just that – a COMMITMENT. Be bold and give the people in the UK something to believe in and an example to follow.

And of hope… well perhaps the publicity generated through the appeal process will wake everyone up to the fact that all voices are important and if we shout loud enough we may show the world that we are courageous in the face of the world biggest challenge and that we are prepared to put people and planet first – Please do the right thing.

Getting ready for Poznan

In a week where leaders from the world's religious traditions have signed a manifesto urging tough action on climate change and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil has accelerated for the first time in four years, I’ve been waiting for news about Poznan,

In a week where an opinion poll in 11 countries has produced what organisers term a "global mandate" for action on climate change because about half of the respondents wanted governments to play a major role in curbing emissions, but only a quarter said their leaders were doing enough, I’ve been hoping for more media profile on Poznan.

The question that hangs in the air is… Poznan? What’s going on there and exactly who will take the responsibility for action and when will leaders pull together and lead?

This week the UK was set to make history last night when the climate change bill received royal assent and brought into law the world's first legally binding targets for a nation to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. Sounds promising but what does it mean? What’s the deal? How will the population of the UK prepare – will everybody be corralled into unilateral CO2 restrictions. This could be a democratic disaster when so many people are still so unaware of the problem… I’ve been waiting for news about Poznan,

There is little time to make difference… I am hopeful that information, guidance, technologies and logical strategies for behaviour change will be communicated soon so that we can be involved in the process – after all it’s only the planetary environment for human survival that’s at stake and I’d have thought that by nature people are far happier being involved and engaged rather than having pre prescribed ‘solutions’ imposed on them. Poznan?

Any way… despite the almost total absence of news coverage… next week the world will meet at Poznan to talk about the many facets of Global Climate Change. I don’t care that it’s the ‘warm up’ meeting to the talks in Copenhagen next year – we don’t have the luxury of further months of waiting… I can’t wait for news and insight into the action; I’m a mum with a future generation to protect – the voice of children in a changing climate is important and it needs representing – which is why I will be going to Poznan.

Singing, Spontaneity and a Rhapsfeety Saturday

Most of the time my mind is a jumble of ideas, dreams and other stuff I should really add to the ‘to do’ list. I guess, not unlike many people I’m constantly thinking. Sometimes I experience almost a ‘vision’ style of thought where a whole idea is played out with clear features and tasks that would lead to a result that would mean something - well to me at least!

When this happens, I am compelled to bring the idea to life. Of late my life is increasingly filled with this type of thinking (I’m pretty sure that I am of sound mind!) and the Bohemian Rhapsody project is an example of this. It’s Sunday 23rd November and I’m delighted that our Footprint Friend ‘Bohemian Rhapsfeety’ production has been published.

Getting this project started required performers. The logistics of this I struggled with until I woke up to the fact that it didn’t need to be complicated and with the support of my wonderful daughter Amelia and two of her amazing friends, Alice and Nadine – we made it happen. And WOW can they sing! Even when having a good giggle at the bizarreness of it all – I was really impressed with their professional approach and constructive feedback to each other - I’ll publish the outtake movie soon.

Spontaneity
In my experience, acting on the spur of the moment will often bring about results equal to what would be achieved after weeks of planning. Best of all, a spontaneous act will usually reward those taking part with a lasting memory – I think this is because spontaneity requires a mental gear change to trust in the moment and the people you are sharing it with. The brain tends to remember things like this – well mine does. The Bohemian Rhapsfeety performance was most definitely the result of spontaneity!

Time to ACT - We are running out of time.

19th November 2008 - On my way to London in the Guardian I read. “We have less than 8 years to start making an impact on co2 emissions” This is not something new... I have heard this before....

About 2 years ago, I attended a conference called THINK and I met with the speakers (Thinkers) and they were saying we have about 10 years to make a difference. Back then I was prepared to do the research and challenge the debate... well during the past 18 months - it would seem that even the worst case scenario projections are getting worse.... and the time is passing - quickly.

Then when I arrived at my destination – The Earth Summit at the O2 dome – I bumped into Bill McGuire who only the day before via his presentation, introduced the audience to a some startling climate change science and his book entitled ‘seven years to save the planet.’ Of the experts I have met on my travels, they not only agree with the cause and effect of the unavoidable changes to our climate, they also have a pretty good idea of how long we have left to influence the outcome. BUT what is the world doing about it? And at what pace? What does the average person know about these issues and why are we all not demanding action.

We have to take these experts seriously and yet we don’t. I can’t help but wonder why. Who is taking the lead? The Guardian suggests that only Barack Obama can save the world but NO! ITS UP TO US!!

Teachers take note - the students at the Earth Summit felt that they do not have enough information and a majority felt that their schools are simply not doing enough - over 600 students were in the audience - if we asked all the students in the UK between 11-18 what would they say?

Bill joked that he would keep releasing books every year.... 'six years to save the planet' then 'five years to save the planet'..... the science is conclusive - every day counts and we are running out of time.

Earth Summit 2008

Earth Summit 2008

I have just returned home after attending The Earth Summit 2008 at the O2 stadium organised by Study Experiences. It was a 2 day event with some thought provoking and inspirational presentations. I have come away feeling even more determined to ensure young people understand the consequences of inaction and the opportunity they have now to be part of and instrumental to the decision making process for a sustainable future.

The key focus of the summit was:

“Climate Change and sustainable development: Adaptation and Mitigation.”

Day 1 was all about the science of Climate Change and the presenters did not hold their punches on the situation we are in and the challenges we all face. The clear message is that we have already caused the planet to warm and that even if we took immediate action to reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere right now, today - we cannot avoid the damage we have caused so far and we will have to learn to adapt to it. Underlying that stark reality however is that if we carry on avoiding the problem and continue to pollute our atmosphere with excessive green house gas, the consequences will likely be beyond what we can adapt to and will more likely be catastrophic for life on earth. We have just a few years to influence our future – and our voice has never been so important in giving a living things a chance for survival.

Day 2 was in the main about the voice of the audience. It began with a talk by Steve Fuller of EDF energy about innovations and the development of renewable energies.

Then there were some great presentations from students including our own Climate Change Champions Adam and Patrick.

An amazing 2 days in the broadest sense of the word.

Make Change Happen

This week, Americans made history.

In his victory speech, Obama said "There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created."

He now has a responsibility to bring that vision to the world. One way he can show us his passion for making change happen is to take a decisive stand against dangerous climate change and he can prove his commitment by attending the UN climate talks this December in Poznan, Poland.

Yvo de Boer, the UN climate chief said this week that "It is impossible to advance on this important topic without the full engagement of the United States. I hope that he or his representatives can come to the climate change conference in Poznan and speak to his vision of the way forward."

Here's where we can influence. We can support an exciting campaign to request that the Barack takes the UN climate talks in Poland seriously by attending.

Cantell School Case Study

My journey started when I completed an on-line survey to check my own carbon footprint. I was curious to see how the survey worked and whether it would be suitable material for a lesson. I was stunned to learn that if everyone lived as I do, we would need 4 (four) earths. I instantly knew that replacing the light bulbs and composting vegetable peelings would not be enough to make any impact.

My journey continued when my Geography students were no longer interested in the environment as it had become old hat and no longer relevant in their eyes. The resources and traditional approaches were in dire need of reinvention.

The idea came to teach about the environment in a meaningful way in both Geography, Citizenship and in the RSA opening minds curriculum through use of the internet and blogs with Footprint Friends (FPF).

Footprintfriends.com provides the ideal way of engaging secondary age students. Students are media savvy and are able to use technology confidently to find information and to communicate with friends. The FPF web site provides students with a voice where they can discuss climate change with others of the same age and start to take action and make a difference.

We had been teaching the whole of our year 7's about the environment all year and saw that using Footprint Friends would enable them to extend their understanding and widen their network of like minded young people.

We had a non school uniform day and set out one class room with a tarpaulin on the floor, lots of paint and paint brushes.

Then we invited one class of year 7's in at a time and they sat down and painted their feet. Then we gave a photo of each foot to the Footprint Friends team and they are now all in the Cantell School gallery!

Our children are encouraged to debate on the Footprint Friends forum and extend their environmental awareness

Business Development (c. 25% of time)

Work alongside the Regional Manager to help grow the onshore renewables EIA (and related) business in line with company strategy and marketing campaigns (with scope to influence these). This will entail both developing relationships with new clients and also the development of work portfolios with existing clients, including localizing with key major clients. Specifically, the post will entail

• Client liaison (existing and new contacts);
• Attendance/presentation and networking at key exhibitions and conferences;

Working in conjunction with Footprint Friends to encourage networking within the renewables and climate change arena we would like to introduce you to our brand new jobs area. Our aim at Katten Elljay is to offer a niche recruitment and advisory package that reaches out globally to individuals and companies operating or considering operating in these sectors. We work on a whole host of different roles within a variety of service lines including project management, engineering, research, financial services, policy and consulting.
